MESSAGE FROM CHIEF
To the Citizens of North Prairie:

For those of you that I have not met, allow me to inroduce myself.  My name is Salvador A. Tamez.  I have worked for the Village of North Prairie since 1989 and in 1997 I was appointed Chief of Police.

Since my appointment, I can proudly say the North Prairie Police Department has committed itself to working toward bringing the police department and the community together.  Our Department is dedicated in striving towards a common goal of improving and stregthening the quality of life in the Village of North Prairie.  Our number one priority will always be the safety of our citizens.  The department and I will continue to work with the public in an effort to learn the needs and wants of the community.  I feel it's important that a Police Department keep an open door policy.  I believe this policy will help our department determine and act on the needs of the community, whether it's crime prevention, patrol, special services, public speaking engagements or any other police related activity.

The thoughts and ideas of the public are important to us, the information we obtain helps to keep us strong and energetic.  It is my goal to keep our partnership healthy and progressively moving forward.  I shall work hard to identify and provide solutions to specific public safety needs for our community.  I will continue to search for new  and innovative ways to provide the highest level of law enforcement service possible.

Currently, the Police Department is working with Prairie View Elementary School on a program that gives our children an opportunity to identify on a personal level with Law Enforcement Officers.  The response from the school regarding this program has been positively received and to this date has worked very well.  This is a step in the right direction toward bridging the gap between the students and the police department.  We look forward to expanding our efforts to include the area preschools.  I feel that it's important for children to have positive police interaction.  Further expansion of this program is contingent on the availability of time at all levels, including school and police department staffing.

We are also in the process of reinstating the Neighborhood Block Watch Program.  In order for this to be successful citizen involvement is imperative.  Without the commitment from you, your family, friends and neighbors, helping to protect one another's homes, property and families, this program will not be effective.  As you may be aware, the Neighborhood Watch Program is under way and while we've had a slow start we hae some very dedicated participants.  It was only with their efforts that we were able to sponsor our first National Night Out, this past August, which was a huge success.  We are also in the process of putting together a Business Watch Program.

Remember, it is only with the help of the community that a police department can successfully operate.  I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone for the support given to me and my staff.  We look forward to working together in the future.
